Sussex Farmhouse

Project type

Wild Country Garden

Location

Sussex

Status

Ongoing

For this special project, the aim is to create a wild country garden that blends seamlessly with the property's rich agricultural history and its beautiful surroundings. The site, with its agricultural roots spanning over 150 years, is being transformed into a naturalistic landscape that supports wildlife and enhances the breathtaking views of undulating meadows and wooded hills.
Since 2022, we have been working closely with the clients to shape the garden in phases. So far, we have developed all areas surrounding the house, including a terraced area to one side of the house as it's on a slope, including a gravel garden with scented Mediterranean-style planting. We've also converted an old tennis court into a productive garden surrounded by an edimental woodland and a cutting garden. We've restored the old farm pond, planting it with a wide range of native species to create a thriving habitat for wildlife.
The garden remains very much a work in progress, with future plans including wildflower meadows and an orchard, and further development of the pool area. As part of the establishment process, protective rabbit fencing has been installed around new planting this spring (2025); this will be removed next year once the plants are strong enough to thrive unaided.
This project exemplifies how a garden can evolve over time through a strong and ongoing collaboration with clients who are both deeply invested in their land and passionate about caring for the environment. It is an unfolding journey that will continue to grow and mature in the years ahead.
