Scarp House
Paragraph 84 Landscape, South Downs National Park
Scarp House is a Paragraph 84 project currently in the early stages of development, shaped through close collaboration with Architects Atelier de Linde and SJD Projects. Together with our client, the ambition is to create a family home that is profoundly rooted in its landscape, one that is inseparable from its setting on the South Downs and emerges directly from its environmental context.
The vision for Scarp House is deeply personal and landscape-led. The proposals respond carefully to the character, ecology and long history of the site, with the aim not only of preserving its qualities but enhancing them for future generations. The landscape design is informed by a detailed understanding of landform, soils, vegetation and long views, ensuring a strong and enduring relationship between architecture and place.
The site occupies a dynamic position within a long-established corridor of movement and exchange across the Downs. As it transitions from agricultural pasture to residential garden, the landscape strategy acknowledges this layered narrative of change. The emerging garden will be structured yet naturalistic, expansive yet carefully managed, allowing the house to sit quietly within its wider setting.
At this early stage, the landscape for Scarp House is conceived as a living framework, one that will evolve over time, support biodiversity and reinforce a strong sense of place, anchoring the new home within its extraordinary setting.
