The Garden for the Future at Sheffield Park and Garden

Opening Summer 2025

We’re proud to be working in partnership with the National Trust on The Garden for the Future at Sheffield Park and Garden – a bold and sensitive revitalisation of a space within this iconic Grade I listed landscape.

Now fully planted with over 5,000 plants and around 30 new trees, this landmark project is the first major new garden addition since Sheffield Park came into National Trust care. It represents a pivotal and pioneering moment for the site – blending tradition with forward-thinking design, and setting the stage for the next chapter in its horticultural legacy. The planting has been a truly collaborative effort, brought to life with the help of volunteers, local community groups, and National Trust gardeners from across the region. Together, we've created a garden that celebrates high horticulture, ecological resilience, and inclusive design – with spaces that encourage visitors to connect with nature, reflect, and recharge.

Designed as a ‘garden within a garden’, The Garden for the Future addresses the urgent challenges posed by climate change. It introduces a dynamic, succession-led planting scheme that builds resilience and reimagines how historic gardens can evolve sustainably, while remaining true to their heritage.

The garden also serves as a hub for ongoing professional learning and experimentation – echoing the spirit of Arthur Gilstrap Soames, whose innovative plantings shaped much of Sheffield Park 100 years ago.

Hard landscaping and furniture installation were completed in 2024, marking a major milestone in the garden’s development.

Due to quarantine requirements, the permanent plants could not be installed immediately; instead, temporary wildflowers were sown to provide seasonal interest and support biodiversity throughout the summer.

The garden is now fully planted and will officially open to the public in summer 2025. We can't wait to see how the permanent planting establishes and evolves.
