Joe Perkins Design has announced its collaboration with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) to redevelop the Medjez-El-Bab war cemetery in Tunisia into a climate resilient, biodiverse and sustainable space.

The inaugural site in the CWGC’s pioneer sites initiative, the project represents a shift in adapting historic cemeteries to climate challenges while upholding memory within the war cemetery.

Joe Perkins, founder and director of Joe Perkins Design, says “being entrusted with the care of such a historically and emotionally important site is a tremendous privilege for us. We are honoured to contribute to this progressive initiative alongside the CWGC”.

The site, with over 2,900 Commonwealth servicemen buried, aims to reduce environmental impact whilst maintaining significant landscapes.

Over 75% of the turf is planned to be replaced with drought-tolerant planting, using native and resilient species.

Gravel pathways will be replaced with high-maintenance grass between headstones, alongside succulents, thyme and lavender. Olive and almond trees will also be planted to symbolise peace and regional identity.
