Coastal City Garden

Project type

Coastal City Garden

Location

Brighton & Hove

Status

In progress

This small-to-medium city garden is a showcase of sustainable, wildlife-friendly design. With a focus on local materials, we used larch timber for the decking and gravel for the paths, avoiding concrete and paving wherever possible. The garden is rectangular and initially felt very open, so we planted some trees, Amelanchier, Crabapple, and Katsura, to create a sense of enclosure and make the space feel cosier.

The garden no longer features a lawn. Instead, bulbs were planted and it is now being transformed into a perennial wildflower meadow, supporting local biodiversity. A sunny south-facing border contrasts with a shady woodland area, offering a variety of microclimates for plants and wildlife. Even the garden studio is installed on ground screws rather than concrete, reflecting a commitment to minimal environmental impact.

This garden demonstrates how thoughtful design and sustainable practices can transform an urban space into a biodiverse, serene retreat.
