A Historic Landscape

Project type

Heritage Listed Property

Location

East Sussex

Status

In progress

Set within the historic landscape of Chailey Common, this Grade II listed property is undergoing sensitive redevelopment, with the garden forming a key part of a wider vision to bring cohesion and clarity to the site.

The client is seeking a design that enhances both the heritage of the house and the sense of seclusion offered by the surrounding land. The garden currently feels disjointed, but through careful reworking of terraces, boundaries and circulation, the aim is to create a more welcoming approach, better connections with the paddocks, and a stronger relationship between house and wider landscape.

Practical considerations such as drainage, dog-safe enclosures, and future land use are balanced with a desire for a quintessentially English garden feel—ornamental planting close to the house gradually giving way to meadows, orchards, and long rural views across open countryside.
