An unusual and privileged appointment
Joe was commissioned to design the garden before the house itself had been designed and built. This meant that the formal layout, long axis and vistas could be considered so that the design makes the absolute best use of the site, and we were able to have an influence on the position and ground level of the house itself, in collaboration with the client.
The underlying vision for the garden is a series of identically sized green ‘rooms’ enclosed by yew hedging, each contained space having a distinct character. Leading down from the main terraces a large lawn with deep borders designed for year-round structure and relatively low maintenance gives way to a stately avenue of ‘Frans Fontaine’ hornbeam trees, with adding rooms to the side and connected back to the house via a long oak pergola covered by wisteria and vines.
