Coastal City Garden

This small to medium sized urban garden demonstrates how sustainable design principles can create a richly planted, wildlife-friendly space within a relatively compact footprint.

Locally sourced larch was used for the decking, with gravel paths replacing concrete and extensive paving wherever possible. The rectangular site initially felt exposed, so a series of carefully positioned trees, including Amelanchier, crab apple and katsura, were introduced to create structure, enclosure and a stronger sense of intimacy.

The garden no longer contains a conventional lawn. As the family's needs changed and the children grew older, the lawn was replaced with bulbs and perennial planting that are gradually establishing a species-rich meadow, supporting pollinators and other wildlife throughout the year. A sunny south-facing border contrasts with a shaded woodland garden, creating a range of habitats and growing conditions within a relatively small space.

The garden studio was installed on ground screws rather than concrete foundations to minimise environmental impact. Positioned to one side of the garden rather than centrally, it allows for a secluded, area that captures the sun throughout the day. Sheltered by planting and the studio itself, this space provides a quiet retreat for relaxing, with room for a hammock, informal seating and a fire pit for the evenings.
