Salvias for summer! This is why Salvias are a must in the summer garden:
They look great in almost all planting schemes and come in a huge range of colours and forms.
They’re easy to grow…….
They’re great for under planting roses……
Dry gardens……
Herbaceous borders……
They flower for months on end, from the beginning of summer until October, sometimes even longer.
They’re nectar rich, so are a magnet for bees, butterflies and other pollinator insects.
So, if you don’t already have salvias in your garden you have plenty of time to start planning them for next year!

What’s a weed?
According to the dictionary it’s “a wild plant growing where it’s not wanted and in competition with cultivated plants.” These Echium vulgare are often seen as ‘weeds’ and I beg to differ!
It is a native biennial plant that occurs throughout Europe and Western Asia and it’s important to note that it can be invasive in certain areas. However, it’s also a nectar-rich wildflower that’s a magnet for bees and other insects and it’s super easy to grow. It’s looks striking with ornamental sun-loving grasses and glaucous or grey-green leaved subjects such as wild carrot Daucus carota and annual poppies. It also associates well with non-native sun-loving grassland species such as Gladiolus byzantinus and the Sicilian garlic Nectaroscordum siculum. It won’t work every where or with everything but Beth Chatto’s “right plant right place” springs to mind here. Dry, sunny and a bit wild.
I think we need to rethink what we class as ‘weeds’ because many are highly valuable species for resilient and biodiversity landscapes. Sure, some are less desirable than others and we need to be aware of when and where, and with what…
Echium Vulgare featured heavily in our Chelsea Flower Show garden in the dry meadow planting and was definitely not classed as a weed there!

How nice is this weather?! Perfect for enjoying a garden like this one!
Situated in picturesque Kent countryside surrounded by fields this property is traditional in design but contemporary in detail.
We will soften it with lots of soft billowing perennial planting. Grasses and structural evergreen shrubs will punctuate this and add year long presence. The layout provides various different seating areas, a swimming pool and a hot tub for those cooler days and evenings.
How nice would it be to be by that pool right now?!
